Thanksgiving Month

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.” (1 Chronicles 16:33-35) Don’t become so caught up with the holiday that you forget the reason for its institution.

In 1863 America was pitted against itself in a battle of states’ rights, preservation of the union, and the issue of slavery. Families were torn between relatives on one side of the fight and others on the opposite side. We had defeated the mighty English empire nearly a century before, yet bureaucracy and politics were forcing an inner struggle that threatened to tear our nation apart. It was during that time that our fearless President Abraham Lincoln, in the midst of his struggle to keep peace in our land, took time to draw the focus on the American people to a single act-the act of thankfulness. He pointed out the fact we were an independent nation, free from tyrannical rule. The fact God had blessed America’s fields with crops and food. The fact that God Almighty had been good to America. The following is part of the proclamation he made, establishing a day to stop and give thanks to God for the blessings He had given America:

“Whereas, it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; Whereas, both the houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me ‘to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness!’

“Now therefore, I do recommend next, to be devoted by the people of the states to the service of that great and glorious being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be, that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country.”

President Lincoln and the Congress knew that even in the midst of severe conflict, Americans had much for which to be thankful. No matter how bad the debate, disagreements, and fighting became; Americans had been blessed by God and needed to stop and thank Him.

The same is true in our lives today. No matter how difficult a trial we face, how great a loss we experience, or how tough a circumstance; God has been good to us. If nothing else, He has given His only Son to die on the Cross so we might spend eternity with Him. That is enough to fill a year with days of thanksgiving!

Traditionally, this is the time of year that we take time to remember our blessings and give thanks for them. We take one day out of November to remember the countless ways God has blessed our lives. But there isn’t enough time in just one day to thank God for everything. I want to challenge you to make a list right now of things for which you are thankful. List thirty ways God has blessed you. It could be a new job, daily provisions, a loving spouse, eternal security, or many other ways.

Then if you keep a calendar, pencil those thirty blessings in for each day of November. Designate a blessing a day, and determine to dwell on that blessing and thank God for it all day.

Don’t become so consumed with the holiday that you forget the reason for it’s institution. Let the month of November be a month of praise and thanksgiving to God for all He’s done. Remember our verse today, and allow a spirit of thankfulness to overflow you this month: “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.”

Parson to Person

I started last months Parson to Person with a few scolding words in regard to our church attendance. In fact much of last month’s Trumpet was dedicated to the subject of church attendance. I have come to a conclusion or two as a result of some reflection and meditation on the matter. I believe some of our church families have simply fallen out of love for the Lord. I had made the statement last month that, “It is a strong congregation whose members can be counted upon to assemble together unless they are truly hindered from the Lord.” That principle was taken from something that Jesus stated in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “QV12″ />Matthew 6:33. “Seek first the kingdom of God.” One of the ways we accomplish this task is to place the Lord’s church before the other things that compete for our time and energy.

I heard a preacher say, if you have someone who doesn’t attend the evening service faithfully, “call upon them to pray for the evening service. It would be difficult indeed to pray for the evening service if they aren’t planning to attend.” I then began to wonder, “who would I call upon!”

Would your name pop up on that list? Would I be putting you on the spot, in asking you to pray for the evening service. Has your past attendance in the evening services, or the Wednesday services, placed you on that list of names to call upon to pray for the evening services. I don’t think you need me to call your name. If you have read this article you know if you are on that list or not. By the way, I haven’t made a list.

But if I did, would your name be on it?

Moving on, I’m looking forward to the next couple of months. We have Thanksgiving to look forward to and if that doesn’t get you excited your exciter is broken! Then just a few days after that we have the last of our 5th Sunday Revival services, Nov. 29th—Dec. 1st. We have the honor and pleasure of having one of the premiere Evangelist of our day with us this month – Roger Henson. Brother Henson and his family will be with us Sunday through Tuesday. On Sunday we will be having our Pot Providence Dinner followed by an early afternoon service at 2:00pm. Then Brother Henson will be preaching for us on Monday and Tuesday at 7:00pm. We need to avail ourselves to this great man of God during the short time we have with him. Won’t you now plan to attend every opportunity you can during this time for revival. We can become stronger Christians, and a stronger congregation if we will all be faithful attendee’s of every church service.

Before you know it will be Christmas time and the time to remember the birth of our Dear Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Don’t let a single day go by without your acknowledging His right to your love and attention.

It may not seem like it by reading the last two months Parson to Person but I do love you very much and so does the Lord. So stay sweet and keep serving Him. Linda and I pray for you often. May the Lord bless each of you.

Faithfulness in Prayer

“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” (Luke 18:1) Christ went more readily to the cross, than we do to the throne of grace.—Thomas Watson Great military leader and devout Christian General Robert E. Lee once wrote, “Knowing that intercessory prayer is our mightiest weapon and the supreme call for all Christians today, I pleadingly urge our people everywhere to pray. Believing that prayer is the greatest contribution that our people can make in this critical hour, I humbly urge that we take time to pray—to really pray. Let there be prayer at sun up, at noonday, at sundown, at midnight — all through the day. Let us all pray for our children, our youth, our aged, our pastors, our homes. Let us pray for our churches. Let us pray for ourselves, that we may not lose the word ‘concern’ out of our Christian vocabulary. Let us pray for our nation.

Let us pray for those who have never known Jesus Christ and redeeming love, for moral forces everywhere, for our national leaders. Let prayer be our passion. Let prayer be our practice.”

Prayer is one of the great privileges of the Christian life. Lowly, sinful human beings are allowed to approach the Holy of holies, the Lord God, the Creator of the earth. The very One, who set the stars in the sky and formed the tiny ant invites you into a daily time of conversation, confession, requests, and praise with Him. He desires to hear personally from you.

Yet sadly, many times we can become weary in our prayers. We bring a request before God for a length of time, and after not seeing God’s answer right away, we can become discouraged and give up.

In the closing verses of John 17, Jesus teaches about His second coming.

After presenting that great truth, Jesus gives the admonition in 18:1 that “men ought always to pray and faint not.”

God does not want us to “lose heart” in our prayer lives, but has promised to be our advocate as we are faithful to continually seek Him in prayer.

When we pray, we come before God with a pure heart and lay our requests at His feet, trusting Him to take care of them. God has three answers to our

petitions: yes, no, or wait. Sometimes what we are asking is in the will of God; sometimes it’s not in our best interest; and sometimes God’s timing is not right yet.

Have you ever prayed over something for months or even years without seeing results? Do not become discouraged. God hears your prayers!

Praying faithfully takes faith to know that God hears what you are asking and is working everything out for your good. God has a plan for that request and will fulfill it in His time.

Think of that one request you have been praying about for a while. Do you believe that God can and will answer your request? Do you trust that His answer will be perfect, even if it doesn’t match your desired outcome?

Then have faith and continue praying faithfully, trusting that God is in control.

Baptist We Should Know

George Whitfield

and the Baptists

By Thomas Ray

George Whitfield, the renowned English evangelist, made his first voyage to America in 1738. His preaching ignited a fire known as the Great Awakening, which engulfed the entire nation and helped transform America and save it from atheism and rationalism.

However, strong opposition to his message of free grace from unconverted and carnal ministers forced him to conduct most of his meetings in the more evangelical Presbyterian and Congregational churches. This opposition has led several historians to falsely attribute the lack of participation of Baptists in the Great Awakening to their hostility to Whitfield and his methods. However, their lack of involvement can be easily explained by the fact that in 1740 there were only 65 Baptist churches in America with approximately 3,100 members. Most of their churches were located in rural areas and few Baptist churches had the luxury of a full-time pastor.

In spite of their scanty numbers, Charles Maxson, historian of the Great Awakening, declares that Baptists received the greatest benefit from Whitfield and the Great Awakening. One Baptists who actively supported Whitfield and aggressively participated in the Great Awakening was Jenkin Jones (1686-1760), pastor of the Pennypack and Philadelphia Church.

Jones and Whitfield first met in Philadelphia in 1739. Whitfield described their meeting in his journal: “I went in the afternoon to see the Baptist teacher (Jenkin Jones) who seems to be a spiritual man.” The entry from Tuesday, November 6, said, “Was visited in the evening by the Presbyterian and the Baptist preachers who were much rejoiced to hear Jesus Christ preached in the church.” The two preachers had attended the Episcopal Christ Church to hear Whitfield. That church would eventually bar Whitfield from their pulpit.

After a lengthy preaching tour, Whitfield returned to Philadelphia April 14, 1740. The following comments reveal the deep affection and friendship that had developed between Whitfield and Jones:

“It is impossible to express the joy that many felt when they saw my face again. Oh, how they did comfort my heart with the account of what God had done for their own and many other people’s souls. The Baptist minister (Jenkin Jones) in particular, who had been instrumental in watering what God had planted, recounted to me many noble instances of God’s power of free grace shown in the conviction and conversion of some ministers as well as common people.”

Whitfield left Philadelphia on a brief preaching tour of New York returning May 7. On the day of his arrival, he wrote in his journal, “After dispatching some private affairs, I went and heard Mr. Jones, the Baptist minister, who preached the truth as it is in Jesus. He is the only preacher that I know of in Philadelphia who speaks feelingly and with authority. The poor people are much refreshed by him, and I trust the Lord will bless him more and more.” The Baptist historian, David Spencer, states “This evaluation by the renowned George Whitfield to the spirituality and preaching ability of Jenkin Jones is a worthy compliment to one of the ablest and most useful Baptist ministers of the eighteenth century.” Jones responded to Whitfield’s visit by inviting him to preach at the Pennypack Church. Whitfield accepted the invitation and preached “to about two thousand people.”

It is obvious from Whitfield’s journal that Jones was more than a supporter; he was a zealous participant in the revival. Baptists like Jenkin Jones, Oliver Hart, Benjamin Miller, John Gano, David Thomas, Shubal Stearns, and Daniel Marshall, who had been influenced by the Great Awakening, helped lay the foundation that produced the phenomenal growth of Baptists in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Men Have Forgotten God

“For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.” (Hosea 8:14) In his 1983 acceptance speech for the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, Alexander Solzhenitsyn recalled the words he heard as a child when his elders sought to explain the ruinous upheavals in Russia: “Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.” He added, “If I were called upon to identify briefly the principal trait of the entire twentieth century, here too I would be unable to find anything more precise and pithy than to repeat once again: ‘men have forgotten God.’”

It is true of our society today that men have forgotten God. In a time when the Ten Commandments from courtrooms are being taken down, prayer banned from schools, and our national motto is being questioned; it is clear to see that people have forgotten the God who has blessed this nation.

In our verse, Hosea is lamenting that the Israelites had forgotten God.

Their sacrifices to false gods were displeasing to Him. They had built up their city and expanded beyond their borders, yet they had forgotten God.

America, much like Israel, was originally founded on the truths of God’s Word. Our Founding Fathers looked to the Bible for guidance in establishing a nation. Yet now, it can be safely said that men have forgotten God.

What can we do about the spiritual condition of America—and all nations for that matter? How can we make a difference in a land that has forgotten God? Remember Jesus’ last command—go and tell, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:19–20).

There was a reason one of the last things Christ told the disciples was to go and tell others of Him. More important than reminding them of His miracles, pointing them to the future, or talking about the spiritual condition of their world, was His command to get the Gospel out.

What do you think it will take for people to turn to Christ? As God says, “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14). In order for our world to turn back to Christ, it’s going to take you personally telling those around you of God’s love for them. Before the world can be changed, your heart must change. Do you see the world as Christ sees them—souls He died to save? Do you have a burning desire to see others saved? Many people say they wish our nation and the world would change, but few do anything about it.

Determine in your heart today that rather than talking about the problems of the world, you will be part of the solution by spreading the Gospel to as many people as you encounter.
